project BITE update (December)

The school of arts resource has been reviewed by the external assessor and is presently being implemented for expansion onto the web. At present the pages have been created and the content is being added allowing for the main website to be uploaded in the next week or so. The layout of the site follows the same site path as the work done in Director, but also will include new case studies and updates from newly created materials.

School of Arts

Its official.. the school of the arts resource is almost complete. All the links work, all the correct navigation moves to the right area, and the development of the personal assistant has worked. I have now settled with a PDA type device with a button that you press, that shows the assistant talking to you within a defined screen area. The newly updated resource will be showcased to a selection of academics who teach in the school of arts, and feedback and comments will be taken depending on the responses that are received.
The staff development materials are to be added onto 2 types of medium, allowing them to be accessed via the internet and also accessible via a DVD.

The school of Education resource is the second of the resources to be designed and created, and using the template created in the arts resource, this one will use many of the same features, links and materials although the subject specific section will use these in a different way.

BITE project continued....

Hi all,

apologies for the delay of this post, i have a feeling that it has been several weeks. However, since the last update things have progressed dramatically with the BITE project e-resource. I have updated several of the sections from ideas suggested by both Rachel and the Academic Librarians, and the project has also had it first presentation to Andrew Comrie, the critical friend. This meeting has proved vital in the projects development, as many ideas and suggestions were brought up to enhance its overall development.

As a result of this meeting, the first of the resources for The School of Arts is in its final stages of completion and will be ready for formal presentations to members of this school within the next 2 weeks or so. With this in mind, focus now will be switching to the development of the second resource for The School of Education, which is already under development with the main background design being produced and the layout and content in transition also.

However one issue has arisen surrounding development of a computer based interactive assistant, and currently this still needs more development. However stay tuned for information on this front as it develops.

New term approaching

This is a follow on to the post made on the 21 august...

I have just come back from holiday and looking back over the work done in July and August it is clear that the initial design and development of the School of Arts director file is near completion except for a few minor additions and changes. This therefore allows for development to commence on the other BITE developments for the other 3 schools within The University of Northampton.

BITE project School of Arts Director work

This post is a continuation of the work that i have been undertaking on the School of Arts Director file development. Since the last post to this blog, i have added a range of interactive videos using Camtasia to allow the academic staff to understand the notions around adding blogs and podcasts to their work. I have added video tutorials on video production using Microsoft Windows Movie Maker and other video editing softwares, and i have developed areas on the Director Projector for Media, English and Performance studies in the School of Arts. I am waiting for feedback from staff concerning the layout and feel of the area, and also for academic material to be added.

I have also come up with questions surrounding the use of Streaming audio and video at northampton, and would like to know the procedures in place to make these things effective. Once i know this i can update the areas on the Director file in order to accommodate these features. This is also the case for the specific e-book and e-journals that would be useful for the academics and students teaching and undertaking an English degree.
I have added keyboard accessibility to the file and i am updating the accessibility features for the buttons that are in place currently.

This is my last post before holiday, more to follow on my return...

A month has passed...

This post comes after a month and a half in my e-learning role at Northampton. The director file is coming on well with many of the main menu systems and navigation buttons are added and operational. I have started to incorporate accessibility functionality into the system, and i have been able to successfully overcome some lingo problems that occurred when trying to access pdf documents from the projector file. I have recently started work on the main Arts section of the program, where i shall be incorporating small video clips on how to blog, create podcasts and create simple videos using Microsoft Movie Maker. This will ultimately benefit the academics, as for many of them they do not require large amounts of information to use these features, they just require a simple step by step process which will allow them to see the benefits of the software and if they could incorporate these into their learning and teaching of their students on the courses.

The BITE Project

As a result of a successful bid to the Higher Education Academy, the University of Northampton has been allocated funding to create BITE.

The BITE project will build upon existing staff development in the area of e-learning within the University, through the creation of an exemplar online course. This course will consist of bite sized ‘chunks’ of learning to enhance and develop staff ability to teach more effectively online through engagement with interactive materials and activities.
The project team will also consider methodologies to measure the true cost of developing materials for e-learning.

This blog is a record of the ongoing progress for the BITE project
